FTZMA entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MAS Foundation for Change for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources yesterday at FTZMA Chairman’s office extending their collaborative partnership to combat ocean plastic pollution in the country. Two locations in Negombo lagoon area have been spotted in embarking on this project in coming days.

The MoU was formalized by our Chairman and the Senior Executive of MAS Foundation for Change Mr. Dilip Alwis who had deputized the Director of MAS Foundation for Change – Ms. Sharika Senananayke.

]]> The General Secretary of the Free Trade Zone Manufacturers Association (FTZMA) Dhammika Fernando says that around Rs. 4 billion in revenue has been lost this month due to the disruption of production in the Katunayake Free Trade Zone due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Around 275 factories have been set up in the country’s major Free Trade Zones located in Katunayake, Biyagama, Mirigama, Malwatta, Wathupitiwala and Koggala.
Another 86 factories have been set up outside the Katunayake FTZ.

He said that production has been severely disrupted as about 60% of the employees working in these companies are absent from work.

]]> The Free Trade Zone Manufacturers Association (FTZMA) has written to President Ranil Wickremesinghe expressing its opposition to the proposed 30% tax on profit earned, warning it will have a serious impact on their survival and in luring much needed FDIs to Sri Lanka.

In their letter to President, FTZMA Chairman Jatinder Biala and Secretary Dhammika Fernando said the proposed 30% is an “intolerable rate” and not the concessionary rate to exporters who have to compete with regional countries such as Bangladesh, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand with whom Sri Lanka exporters have to fight for foreign markets, buyers etc. It said the corporate tax for exporters in both India and Bangladesh is half of the standard tax rate.
